Unu ponte pro Sardigna
In Sardinia, there are many thalassemia sufferers whose families make their living as smallholders. In some cases, several family members may be affected by the disorder and usually these families have no financial means to pay for private health insurance. But the Italian public health system does not cover all the costs of the necessary medical procedures and medication, which often puts families under extreme financial strain, as the costs for treatment and medication are very high.
Since mid 2010, Thalassämiehilfe ohne Grenzen e. V. has been running the "A Bridge to Sardinia – Unu ponte pro Sardigna" campaign to provide families with support and relieve some of the financial burden. These families are regularly visited by the social welfare officer of Thalassämiehilfe ohne Grenzen e. V. to check what help they specifically need.
Together with a shipping agent that specializes in Sardinia and is providing transport free of charge, clothing, linen and a donation of confectionery from the company Kaisers-Candy have already been distributed in collaboration with local parents' associations of thalassemia sufferers.
For "A Bridge to Sardinia – Unu ponte pro Sardigna" we are therefore asking for donations of clothing and everyday items, as well as monetary donations to buy school materials for affected children and teenagers.
